What do you think of when you hear the word fasting? Do you think it means starving yourself or only drinking water for days?

There are many different ways to fast and the one I’m talking about is short term fasting. It’s rather easy and really good for you. Your body uses a lot of energy and resources to digest food. When you don’t eat for an extended period of time you’re giving your body a break from digestion and a chance to focus on other things.

A very simple and effective way to fast is intermittent or overnight. The way it works is having an extended period of time, over 13 hours, between meals.

There are a couple ways you can accomplish this:

  1. Eat your last meal of the day fairly early so at least 13 hours pass before you eat again.
  2. Skip an occasional meal.
I’ve been skipping breakfast on Thursday mornings for at least 9 months. It’s gotten to be part of my routine. Some people skip dinner but it’s easier for me to miss breakfast but you decide what works best for you.

You can drink beverages while you’re fasting too. Water of course is great but you can also consume green juices especially if you plan to do a longer fast. Just avoid sugary drinks, refined & artificial, which you shouldn’t be drinking anyway! ;-)

Drinking plain water all the time can be boring. You can purchase flavored water however make sure it does not contain any sugar or artificial sweeteners and be careful of carbonated waters. Carbonated beverages are not good for the health of your bones.

To flavor water use a slice of lemon, lime, or other fruit or add a drop of ingestible essential oil. Unlike citrus fruit, citrus oils are not acidic and won't damage the enamel on your teeth. If you’re not so sure about ingesting oils and want to know more, let’s chat. Click the button below.

Benefits of Fasting

  • Weight loss
  • Better sleep
  • Eliminate toxins from the body
  • Increase longevity
  • Reduce risk of chronic diseases
  • Stimulate the brain
  • Regenerate cells in the gut
  • Reduce breast cancer recurrence
Like most other behaviors you need to have the right mindset going into it. If you decide you want to fast and tell yourself you can do it, chances are it’ll work.

I’m confident if you do the 13 hours between dinner and breakfast you will notice a difference. Give it a go! I’d love to hear how you do.

Remember to consult your physician before considering a fast, especially a longer one or if you have an underlying health condition.
